What Mold in Air Ducts Looks Like
The first visible sign is usually at the vents. Dark specks collect along the louvers of a vent cover or around the edge of a register. Inside the duct, growth can look like dark spots or a fuzzy film on the lining.
The smell often shows up before anything you can see. A musty, damp odor that gets stronger when the AC or heat comes on points to the ductwork, because the system pushes that air into every room.
The color of a spot is not a diagnosis. Growth can be black, green, gray or white, and its color doesn’t tell you what type it is. Some dark spots even turn out to be dust stuck to a damp surface. What matters for the treatment is where the growth is and what keeps that spot wet.
What Causes Mold in Your Ductwork
Mold needs moisture, and ducts usually get it in one of three ways:
- Humidity. Damp air inside the house keeps duct surfaces from drying out.
- Condensation. Cold ducts sweat when warm, humid air reaches them.
- Leaks. Water from a roof, a pipe or a drain line near the ducts keeps them wet.
Dust inside the ducts gives mold something to grow on, which is why every treatment begins with a cleaning.
The moisture has to be fixed, or the mold comes back. We don’t repair leaks, control humidity or work on HVAC equipment. A plumber, roofer or HVAC contractor handles that part, and we’ll point out what we notice during the inspection.
What the Treatment Does, and What It Doesn’t

- Identifying what type of mold you have.

- A promise that mold never returns. That depends on keeping the ducts dry.

What does mold in air ducts look like?
Most often, dark specks along the louvers of vent covers or around registers. Inside a duct it can show up as spots or a fuzzy film, but the musty smell is usually the first clue.
Is it black mold in my air ducts?
Color alone can't tell you what the growth is, so we don't label it by looks. We inspect the ducts, then clean and fog them the same way whatever the color.
What about white mold in air ducts?
White, fuzzy growth can be mold too, and it's easy to mistake for dust. The approach stays the same: clean the ducts, fog them and get the moisture behind it fixed.
What causes mold in air ducts?
Moisture. High indoor humidity, condensation on cold ducts and water leaks keep the ducts damp, and the dust inside gives mold something to grow on.
Will the mold come back after treatment?
It can if the moisture stays. Cleaning and fogging treat the ducts, while a leak or a humidity problem needs its own fix from a plumber or HVAC contractor.
How is this different from regular air duct cleaning?
Mold remediation includes a full air duct cleaning and adds an antimicrobial fog treatment inside the system.
How long does the mold treatment take?
